1963 - 2001

Director of the Catholic Church organisation Pastoral Social, Sister Yolanda had tirelessly campaigned against the increasingly grave human rights situation in NariƱo in southern Colombia, denouncing abuses against the civilian population by the Colombian security forces and paramilitary groups and provided crucial, practical assistance to their victims.

She had received a number of threats and in 2001 she was shot outside a church in Tumaco by two gunmen believed to be paramilitaries. No one has been officially accused of her murder.
