Elected to parliament in 2005 Joya has been an outspoken opponent of Karzai, the Taleban and war lords. Because of this she faces constant danger; she has already survived assassination attempts.

In 2006 she accused several fellow MPs of being war lords; she was verbally and physically attacked. In 2007 fellow MPs voted to ban her from legislating; effectively, as she says, she was kicked out.

Joya attacked Karzai for the law he passed, which leagalised marital rape, in order to get Shia support; the law allows Shia communities to settle family law according to Shia law.
She believes life for Afghani women is as bad as ever.
