Diaz, based in Bogotá, is a lawyer and has been investigating human rights violations committed during Colombia’s 40 year internal conflict. She works for the Colombian Commission of Jurists (Comision Colombiana de Juristas CCJ) which is a NGO campaigning for human rights.
In March 2009, the CCJ received a fax declaring that Diaz was a ‘military target’. That she was a ‘bitch guerrilla working for the defense of the trade unionists’. It threatened to kill her and her family unless she left Bogota.
Threats are something that HRDs in Colombia face everyday; many have been abducted and killed for doing their work. President Uribe publicly links HRDs to guerrilla groups and uses anti terrorism language against them; making their job even more difficult and more dangerous.
