An advocate for women’s rights in Iran, in 2009 Alikarami accepted the Anna Politkovskaya Award on behalf on the One Million Signatures Campaign. The campaign was a fight against the discriminatory laws that exist in Iran. Laws such as a woman’s life is worth half that of a man; in terms of compensation or ‘blood money’. A woman may not marry without the permission of her father or grand father; if a Muslim, she may not marry a non-Muslim - though a man may marry outside of his faith. Children inherit their Iranian citizenship from their father, so there are children with no birth certificates.

Alikarami makes it clear that she is not against being ruled by an Islamic government; it is the abuse of Islam to repress women that she is against.
