Mahmoud is a political activist who works for the Organisation of Women’s Freedom in Iraq (OWFI), which was founded in 2003. They have worked to raise international awareness of the plight of Iraq’s women; Mahmoud believes life for women has deteriorated since the invasion.

The OWFI provides shelter for victims of violence and those who fear ‘honour killings’. They were the first women’s organisation to protest in Baghdad – 1000 women calling for a secular Iraq. Mahmoud campaigns extensively to have Sharia law removed form the Iraqi constitution.

The OWFI is extremely concerned at the increasing number of women and girls forced into prostitution and trafficked out of Iraq into the global sex trade.
